    Q. Who can donate?

    A. Requirements are:

         -  All potential donors must be at least 17 years of age; 16 with parental consent.

               - You must bring a valid picture ID to donate.

               - Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds; 16 year old donors must weigh 122                pounds.

               - Donors must be in general good health, without any cold or flu symptoms.

    Q. How often can I donate?

    A. Giving whole blood requires a waiting period of 56 days between donations. Plasma donations (your red blood cells are returned to you), you may donate every 28 days. If you donate platelets (your red blood cells and most of your plasma are returned to you) you may donate every 2 days with a maximum of two times a week and 24 times a year. If you donate double red blood cells (most of the plasma is returned to you) you must wait 112 days before your next donation.

    Q. Will my blood donation cover me and my dependents for any blood needs we may have for the next year?

    A. GCRBC eliminated the individual benefits for blood donors in 2010.  There are no community or individual donor benefits that result from a blood donation.

    Q. Where can I donate?

    A. At any of our 4 or 5 annual blood drives at CGS, at any other mobile drive (find a list of drives at www.commitforlife.org) or at any of the Blood Center ’s Neighborhood Donor Centers. The two closest to CGS are:

               - 6935 FM 1960W, Suite A, Houston (281-440-5900) … corner of Cutten Road               and FM 1960W

               - 3901 College Park Drive, Suite 130 , Woodlands (936-321-8440)

    Q. How do I make an appointment to donate?

    A. Register as a Digital Donor (www.commitforlife.org) and sign up on line for any blood drive or at any Neighborhood Donor Center , or sign up for the CGS drives after all masses on the weekend prior to the drive.  You can also call any of the Neighborhood Donor Centers (list found at www.giveblood.com) to schedule an appointment.

    Q. I’m concerned that my prescription medication or travel outside the US will render me unable to donate. How can I check whether I’ll be eligible to donate?

    A. Log on to www.giveblood.com to check current restrictions on travel and on the status of general medications.  You can also call 713-790-1200 for more information.

    Q. I’ve been unable to donate in the past due to low iron levels. What can I eat to raise my iron levels?

    A. Best sources of iron … red meat, liver, poultry, egg yolks. Other good sources of iron … dark green leafy vegetables, cereals/breads, dried beans, dried fruits, dark molasses.

    ¿Cómo hago una cita para donar sangre? Si ésta es la primera vez que usted va a donar sangre, por favor llame al Neighborhood Donor Center más cercano para concertar una cita. Si usted ya ha donado sangre a nuestro centro anteriormente, puede hacer la cita consultando al Donante Digital en nuestro sitio del Internet.

    Me preocupa que el tipo de medicamentos que se me han recetado o viajar fuera de US me puedan impedir ser un donante. ? Como puedo revisar si puedo ser elegible? Visite la pagina web www.giveblood.com. Para verificar restricciones de viajes o preguntas sobre medicamentos.

    No he podido donar antes, porque tenía el nivel de hierro muy bajo. ¿Qué puedo hacer para subir el nivel de hierro en mi sangre? Las mejores Fuentes: carnes rojas, hígado, aves de corral, yema de huevo. Otras fuentes que son buenas: cereales, panes, verduras (legumbres) con hojas verdes oscuras, granos secos, riñones, fríjol pinto, soya, melaza oscura, frutas secas (pasas, albaricoques, melocotones)
